Our Aims

The main aim of our sixth form is to prepare students for A-level examinations and university entrance in a purposeful and friendly environment. Current students and their parents will be aware of the high standard of academic education we can offer, but each year we are also pleased to welcome a number of new students. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact the school to arrange a visit.

Results

The school is proud of our students’ enviable record in public examinations:

• 100% pass rate at A level in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009
• over 70% of entries achieved grades A and B in 2009

We believe these achievements are the result of our rigorous academic ethos combined with warm relationships between students, staff and parents. Our teaching groups are small, which means that highly-qualified and experienced teachers can cater for the needs of individual students, offering the encouragement, motivation and support which they will need to realise their full potential.

Courses Available

A levels are available in the following subjects: English Literature and English Language and Literature; Mathematics and Further Mathematics; Physics, Chemistry and Biology; Electronics (AS only); French, German and Spanish; Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation; History, Geography and Economics, Art and Music; Critical Thinking and General Studies (AS only)

In the sixth form, students will be expected to take on more responsibility for their own learning. All students will have supervised private study time and individual tutorials, to encourage them to build on the knowledge and skills which have been developed in lessons. There is also access to the school’s computer facility and a library.

Future choices

In addition to the preparation for AS and A2 examinations, students are guided through the choices available when they leave Twycross; for most of our students this will involve applying to university.
The process begins in the Lower 6th when pupils are encouraged to use the Centigrade Scheme which assesses individuals’ interests, skills and aptitudes and suggests possible higher education course routes. Students’ academic and social progress is monitored and supported at every stage through to the final examination results and the confirmation of a place on a suitable course.

A Higher Education evening with an external university admissions adviser is held in April of each year for pupils and their parents. In addition we aim to arrange talks by external speakers on specific careers, gap year options and year in industry schemes. We also look to former pupils to talk to our students to provide further insights into their own experiences in subject choice, university life and subsequent chosen career. The school has a wide selection of guides to universities and careers and staff are available for support to help in the choice of possible higher education and career paths.

Sporting and Social Activities

Apart from academic work, students are encouraged to play a full part in the life of the school and to act as role-models for the younger pupils. Many sixth formers participate in the school’s mentoring scheme working with individuals and small groups and help to organise and participate in sporting, musical, dramatic and social activities. The 6th form also have their own common room where social and recreational activities can be organized.

Social activities in the 6th form include a team building activity weekend in Wales, trips to the theatre concerts and exhibitions, a ski trip to Austria and a summer trip to Greece or Crete.

Members of the 6th form continue with Twycross House school sports and can take the Duke of Edinburgh scheme through to the Gold Award. The 6th form may wish to devise their own sport and social programme which could include badminton, basketball, hockey, volley ball, tennis, ballroom or modern dance and other events such as horse riding, water sports, hikes, outward bound courses and visits to the Snow Dome. The school also boasts a number of students who play Ultimate frisbee at international level.

There is an active Debating Society which meets on a regular basis and the society enters local Public Speaking competitions. Members of Lower 6th organise the THS Enterprise Company which gives them the opportunity of devising business ideas, running a company and contact with external business volunteers.

Entry Qualifications

The normal requirement for entry into the 6th form is six GCSEs at B grade. It is preferred that A or A* is achieved at GCSE level in those subjects to be taken at A or AS level.

Course Structure

All pupils will choose four subjects for study leading to a qualification at AS level at the end of Lower 6th. They will then continue with three of these subjects (occasionally all four) to A level. This decision is taken before entry into Upper Sixth.

Please contact the school to request a Sixth Form Prospectus.
