Wind in the Willows

Once again the acting skills of our younger pupils were put to the test for the annual Form 3 plays. This time it was a production of ‘Wind in the Willows’, last performed by the school in 1981 (a few members of staff can remember it!). The excitement rose as the pupils gathered and put on costumes.

Finally the lights dimmed, and the tireless efforts of Mrs Kirkpatrick, Miss Molyneux and Mrs Chambers were rewarded as the audience were treated to an excellent performance by all cast members as we followed the tale of Toad of Toad Hall and his loyal friends through misfortune to ultimate triumph. Thanks must also go to the older students – providing music, lighting, sound and backstage help – who helped to make such a successful production.

May Concert

As always the sports hall was packed for the annual May concert and the audience's enjoyment was palpable.  The programme began with some upbeat singing from the senior choir under Mrs Wortley and ended with a substantial work, Jonah-Man Jazz, from the junior choir directed by Mrs Chambers.  Cast members from the Form 3 production of The Wind in the Willows performed a selection of songs in costume, accompanied by Kennis Chan and Matthew Raybould, and the young members of Mrs Maugham's woodwind ensemble played two jaunty numbers.

To celebrate the season the Hollies choir under Mrs Mead performed A Date with Spring and All Around the Maypole, during which they treated us to an extremely complex and well-executed dance routine.  Kate and Jennifer Mortiboy and Danielle Newey recited their May poem about the dearth of suitable May poems!

Soloists Jess Moore, Guy McDonald, Ben Makin, Matthew Raybould and Alexander Considine illustrated the variety which is the hallmark of every Twycross concert by playing pieces ranging from a Bach violin Partita to an oboe piece called Hot Chilli.  Ben's unpredictable and idiosyncratic performance of his own guitar composition was very entertaining.  (A young pupil was heard to say, 'He's going to get told off big time!')

Thanks to all who contributed to an excellent evening.

Art Exhibition 2009
Wire Sculpture
Due to the outstanding results achieved by our students in the Market Bosworth Art festival competition, we qualified for a grant from the organisers to pay for the wire sculptor Sue Clews to run an art workshop for S5 GCSE Art pupils. Sue demonstrated basic wire sculpting techniques, which the students then developed and used in a very original and varied way to produce supporting pieces for their GCSE art coursework.
Annabel Palmer sculpted a wire horse; Cindy Wan produced decorative flowers for her design sheet; Gracie Hiorns a Chinese dragon; Stephanie Brindley a bird; Elisha Amos an eye; Amelia Rushton fairy wings and Beth Blackburn sculpted a range of planets. All of the pieces can be seen in the forthcoming school art exhibition on Sunday and Monday March 15th & 16th
Annie
The story of an orphan girl who eventually manages to find happiness – this was the latest production from the Swallows Hill ‘Musicals’ department. Once again Mrs. Mead gave up her time with assistance from Mrs. Kirkpatrick to rehearse a cast, this time from Form 4 and Senior 1. Sixth formers Anna Fray and Guy McDonald assisted with the musical accompaniment. The dedication of them all was rewarded with a fantastic production on 16th October, the entire cast producing memorable performances of well-known songs such as ‘It’s a Hard – Knock Life’ and ‘Tomorrow’ which were enjoyed by a most appreciative audience. Well done to all participants.
