NSPCC - Cruelty to children WILL STOP.
Following a visit to the school by Mrs Deborah Sharp of the NSPCC, during which she spoke in assembly of the important contribution the charity makes to child welfare, Senior 1 and Senior 2 pupils were invited to take part in a sponsored ‘Spellathon’. CHRISTMAS ENTERPRISE Once again the Lower Sixth sorted and delivered the thousands of Christmas cards posted in the school post-boxes. The special ‘stamps’ sold for 2p each raise money for charity through the Sixth Form Enterprise Scheme. In addition this term the Enterprise Scheme organised a ‘design your own Christmas card’ initiative. The total for the two activities raised over £200 which will be donated to Cancer Research.

'Cam on' - thank you from Vietnam
In the Spring term we reported that half the money raised from the Red Nose Day sale and all the money raised from the ‘Name the Bunny’ competition, in total £160, would be sent to the Life Start charity brought to our attention by the Everson-Crane family. The Everson-Cranes have reported back on how this donation has helped individuals in Hoi An, Vietnam. The money has gone to support individuals starting a variety of new ventures: Thong is receiving training as a bonsai tree grower; Tam is learning wood-turning and the donation has helped him buy tools for his trade; Life Start is funding a course for Long to learn how to repair mobile phones (if anyone has old mobile phones the Everson-Cranes could take them out to Long next Easter); and Hoa is now starting a greeting card business. Thank you also from Hanh for all the scarf orders.

Rainbows and Easter Eggs
The Easter Egg enterprise organised by Michele Richichi and supported by other members of his year raised a total of £240.19. The Sixth formers were keen that this money should be donated to the local children’s charity – Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough. Caroline Hoare from the charity visited the school to receive the cheque from Michele and also talked to the Sixth form about the valuable work of the charity and the hospice. |

Children in Need
Once again the younger children in school gave generously for ‘Children in Need.’ Two ‘Pudseys’ were covered in stickers – one from Forms 3 & 4, the other from Form and Senior 1. The winners of the ‘Lucky Spot’ competition were Jessica Hirst (Form 5Y) and Robbie Jones (Form 4Y). The teachers had a separate competition and the winner was Mrs Wright. Special thanks must go to Eva Jarman (Form 3X). She volunteered to bake cakes which she sold to Form 3. Mrs Rose also very kindly brought in some home baking which allowed Form 4 and 5 to have a treat as well on ‘Children in Need’ day. We managed to raise £240 from stickers and cakes and ‘Gift Aid’ will add £67. The ‘Mobile Phone’ appeal brought in 21 phones which means that another £105 will be given to ‘Children in Need’, giving a grand total of £412. |

Read Book Project – Warwick University The Read Book Project redistributes disused education resources from the UK to the developing world. The project is a student-led initiative and universities from around the country are involved with the charity. This term we have established a link with the charity based at Warwick University and the student volunteers collected eight boxes of disused mathematics, physics, biology and statistics books. These students will be distributing the books to schools in south Tanzania during their summer vacation. Next term the Warwick students will return to speak with the Sixth form on student volunteering and how we can support the charity further.
